California State University, East Bay began a serious effort to find alternatives to the expensive textbooks our students need to purchase for their university courses.  Seven faculty agreed to be pioneers in a pilot project sponsored by our Academic Programs and Graduate Studies as part of an overall “graduation initiatives” program conducted in 2010-2011.  The “Links to Alternative Textbooks” tab on this Website will take you to their initial efforts.  The conditions for their work were that these alternatives would be free to the student, copyright compliant, accessible, and fully supplant the textbooks that they had been using previously.  The goal is to attract more faculty to the process of creating such alternatives, preferably as full substitutes for existing textbooks.
